A longtime Central Florida favorite with lush cypress lined fairways and well bunkered greens, Wedgefield is a classic Florida style course. Formerly known as Rocket City and Cape Orlando, Wedgefield Golf Club has matured into a player’s delight. Our diverse collection of holes tests all facets of the game. There are short holes demanding accuracy and long holes that require length. Water can be found on eleven holes along with sixty-seven bunkers between the first tee and the eighteenth green. A great round can only be carded if you can successfully survive the punishing final four holes. Superb playing conditions and affordable year around rates is why Wedgefield Golf Club is known as Orlando’s Best Value for Central Floridians and visitors alike.

New sport kicks off in Central Fla.

By Laura Gabaroni | August 30, 2012

Soccer and golf fans, unite, because footgolf is coming to the Sunshine State.

The Orlando FootGolf League will soon offer Central Florida residents the opportunity to try this new sport that gives soccer and golf enthusiasts the best of both worlds wrapped in one single sport.

Footgolf came into being about 3 years ago in Europe and has spread rapidly throughout the world, said Dylan Corbitt, director for the Orlando FootGolf League.

"The sport started in Holland, but it's grown very quickly," Corbitt said. "Currently, 30 countries play, and there are 12 countries in the Federation for International FootGolf."

This exciting new activity represents the marriage between two of the most popular sports on the world stage - golf and soccer. According to the American FootGolf League, the rules are based on the rules of golf, but played by kicking a soccer ball instead of swinging golf clubs.

"It's the elegance of golf with the passion of soccer," Corbitt said. "You take your soccer ball and play golf with it."

The objective of the game is for each participant to land the soccer ball into a hole in the ground, using his or her foot with the least amount of strokes possible. Like in golf, each hole has a par assigned to it, but footgolf pars do not generally exceed par 5 or 6, Corbitt said.

"We will make it fun, but challenging," Corbitt said. "We hope that it will grow from there and really take off."

The official kickoff tournament for the Orlando FootGolf League is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Wedgefield Golf Club, 20550 Maxim Parkway, Orlando, 407-568-2116. For more information, email orlando@footgolf.info.
